AileyCamp Miami is a six-week program for public middle school students that brings children, 11-14 year-old, struggling with poverty, crime, single-parent households and other challenges to the Arsht Center each summer to discover themselves through the power of dance.
DesignLab Miami collaborated with program director Jairo Ontiveros to create a unique patchwork quilt for the closing ceremony of the program. Each patch was a self portrait of the campers face (almost 100 of them!) but the “lines” of their faces were replaced with empowering, self-reflecting words because the program strives to teach each child that they are a valuable member of the community and are important as individuals. This stunning piece was prominently displayed at the closing ceremonies gala at the Arsht Center.
